conscious leadership 101

Conscious leadership is a transformative approach to life and leadership that emphasizes self-awareness, responsibility, and authenticity. By encouraging a deep understanding of oneself and one's impact on others, conscious leaders create environments where individuals and organizations can thrive.

At its core, conscious leadership involves a shift from a reactive, fear-based existence to proactive, trust-based interactions. This paradigm encourages leaders to move beyond traditional authoritative roles and engage with their teams in a more meaningful and connected way. One of the most powerful frameworks in conscious leadership is the concept of living “above the line” versus “below the line.” conscious leadership, in general, flows from the conscious capitalism movement first outlined by john mackey and Rajendra Sisodia in their work ‘Conscious Capitalism.’ two main texts that highlight the concepts of conscious leadership include ‘leader coach’ by sue heilbronner and kaley warner klemp, and ‘The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership’ by Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman, and Kaley Warner Klemp.

the line

according to conscious leadership, At any given moment, humans operate from one of two mental states:

  • Above the Line: Open, curious, and committed to learning.

  • Below the Line: Defensive, closed, and driven by fear.

When leaders are above the line, they take radical responsibility for their actions, embrace challenges as opportunities, and remain open to different perspectives. They see setbacks as lessons rather than threats. This mindset fosters trust, collaboration, and innovation.

the line

Conversely, when leaders are below the line, they react out of fear, blame others, and resist change. Their primary goal becomes proving they are right, maintaining control, or protecting their ego. This creates a toxic environment where creativity and accountability diminish.

The key to conscious leadership is not to always be above the line—because everyone falls below it at times—but to recognize when you are below the line and shift back up. once you’re aware of where you are, you can make the choice.

the 8 choices

heilbronner and klemp, renowned Conscious Leadership coaches, outline Eight Choices of Conscious Leadership that guide individuals toward greater self-awareness and authentic leadership. These choices are designed to foster personal growth and enhance team dynamics.

  1. Responsibility: Embrace 100% responsibility for your life circumstances, recognizing yourself as the source of your own security, control, and approval. This involves moving away from blame and apathy.

  2. Curiosity: Adopt a mindset of learning and openness, considering that challenges may serve your growth. This includes entertaining the possibility that perspectives opposite to your own could be valid.

  3. Feelings: Acknowledge and fully experience your emotions, rather than suppressing or judging them. Embracing your feelings provides valuable insights into your inner state.

  4. Candor: Communicate your authentic thoughts and emotions with the intent to deepen connections. This choice also involves creating an environment where others feel safe to express themselves honestly and eliminating gossip.

  5. Clean Agreements: Establish clear commitments by specifying who will do what by when. Ensure that you enter agreements with genuine willingness and renegotiate when necessary.

  6. Genius: Operate primarily within your Zones of Genius, engaging in activities that leverage your unique talents and passions. This leads to heightened creativity and fulfillment.

  7. Play & Rest: Incorporate play, laughter, and rest into your routine, honoring your natural rhythms and preventing burnout. Recognize that life doesn't have to be solely about hard work and struggle.

  8. Abundance: Cultivate a mindset that there is enough of everything—time, money, love, energy, and resources. This perspective shifts you from a scarcity mentality to one of generosity and collaboration.

By consciously making these choices, leaders can foster environments of trust, innovation, and authentic engagement, both personally and professionally.

practical steps

  1. Self-Reflection: Regularly assess your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to understand your motivations and triggers.

  2. Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate activities such as meditation or journaling to stay present and centered.

  3. Seek Feedback: Encourage honest input from peers and team members to gain diverse perspectives on your leadership.

  4. Continuous Learning: Engage with resources, workshops, and coaching that promote conscious leadership principles.

  5. Foster Open Communication: Create safe spaces for dialogue, where team members feel heard and valued.

  6. Model Desired Behaviors: Demonstrate the qualities you wish to see in your organization, setting a standard for others.
